Yellow Huffcap is considered by some to be the original Huffcap perry pear.

Huffcap is an old English term used to describe any kind of strong drink, and has been applied to several perry pear varieties. However it may also be a term for varieties which have the distinctive elliptical shape characteristic of this variety.

Growing and Training

Unlike most perry varieties, Yellow Huffcap pears will hang on the tree and become over-ripe, so the fruit must either be picked or shaken to the ground.

Yellow Huffcap is heavy-cropping but has a tendency to lapse into biennial bearing. Thin the fruitlets in June to prevent this.

History

Yellow Huffcap is thought to originate from Herefordshire in the 18th century.
