Pacific Red an early-season red cherry. The cherries are sweet and quite large, and should be ripe in late June / early July in southern England.

Growing and Training

Early Red is susceptible to fruit splitting. This is caused by rain in June as the fruits are ripening. It is a serious problem for commercial growers, but perhaps not for the home orchard. It can be prevented by covering the tree to keep the rain off.

Pacific Red is self-fertile, and a good pollinator of other American cherry varieties such as Early Red and Nimba.

Most fruit trees grown in the UK need a long period of winter dormancy with cold temperatures from December to March, but Pacific Red has a "low chill" requirement - this means it will be productive even in a fairly mild winter.
