Catherine ornamental cherry trees

Prunus
  • Flowering month: January
  • Flowering month: February
  • Flowering month: December
  • Blossom colour: White

Catherine is an unusual flowering cherry tree because it flowers so early. The relatively large single white blossoms appear in early winter - possibly even as early as December in some years.

In autumn the leaves turn an intense orange-red in, making this one of the best of the ornamental cherries for autumn leaf colours.

History

Prunus 'Catherine' is thought to be related to Prunus 'Autumnalis Rosea', and shares its characteristic of flowering very early in the winter. However the strong autumn leaf colours take after 'Collingwood Ingram' and Prunus sargentii although its growth habit is not as neat as the former.
