Fugenzo ornamental cherry trees

Prunus
Fugenzo has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit
  • Flowering month: May
  • Blossom colour: Pink - light
  • Awards: RHS AGM (current) 1993

Fugenzo is a traditional Japanese flowering cherry, which grows with a characteristic spreading flat-topped form, and quite similar to another popular traditional flowering cherry, Shirofugen.

The double flowers are particularly large, and pale pink / white in colour.

Although on paper Fugenzo might seem like just another flowering cherry, in the garden it somehow stands out as one of the best. It has a graceful appearance, even from an early age, and exudes harmony and poise.

History

As with many of the Japanese flowering cherries, there is some confusion over the naming of different plant samples that were imported from Japan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, at a time when western enthusiasts first discovered the beauty of the traditional Japanese ornamental cherries. The form of Fugenzo that we sell should perhaps be known as Kofugen, since Fugenzo is also (confusingly) an alternative name for another very similar double-white cherry called Shirofugen. However, regardless of the history, these are both excellent examples of traditional Japanese flowering cherries.
