Spring Glow ornamental cherry trees

Prunus x persicoides
  • Flowering month: March
  • Blossom colour: Pink - dark

On those gloomy grey days in late February and March, when everything else is still dormant, Spring Glow brings a dazzling splash of intense deep pink colour to the garden.

The single flowers are large, dark pink in colour, and appear very early in the spring. Another bonus is that the blossom is long-lasting.

The leaves appear after the blossom, and have an attractive copper red colour - and they remain this colour until the autumn.

Spring Glow is a relatively vigorous tree with an upright habit.

History

Spring Glow was developed in Australia at the start of the 20th century. It is usually listed in the species Prunus x persicoides, which would make it effectively a cross between a peach and an almond. However it has a different habit and flower shape to either of them, and unlike them is not susceptible to peach leaf-curl infection. It is perhaps best considered a flowering cherry-plum, i.e. Prunus cerasifera.
